Quick Hadith 120

Abu Usayd RA and Umar ibn Al-Khattab RA report that Rasulullah SAW said:

"Eat olives and apply its oil (to your hair) for verily it is of a blessed tree." (Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Tirmidhi)


COMMENTARY

Aishah RA reports that Rasulullah SAW used to pour the oil on his left palm and using his right hand, he would first apply some oil on his eyebrows,then his eyes and thereafter on his head (the right side first). (Muntahas-Sul)

However, men should not waste excessive time and effort in grooming their hair. This was prohibited by Rasulullah SAW for it is a habit of women to do so.

The Hair and Beard Of The Prophet Muhammad SAW

Rasulullah SAW kept a full beard which covered the above portion of his chest. There are three narrations regarding the size of his hair: a) Till the ears, b) below the ears, c) till the neck (shoulders).

All three narrations are correct as hair continuously grows. (Shamaail Tirmidhi)

Using Hair Dye - Basic Rules

Generally, the use of pure black dye is not permissible.

Rasulullah SAW said:

"There will be people who will come later (in my Ummah) and apply black dye. They will not even smell the fragrance of paradise." (Abu Dawud).

However, it is should also be known that black dye is permissible for a Mujahid (warrior) to give the impression of being young. (Jawahirul Fiqh: Volume 2: Page 421)

To dye the hair any other colour besides black e.g. Mehndi or Katm (types of grass) is permissible i.e. natural dye. This was the practice of Rasulullah SAW and his Companions RA.

Hair Gels - Implications In Wudhu

When Muslims use hair grooming gels / creams, two things must be taken care of:

1. To make sure that there are no Haraam ingredients in the hair grooming substance

2. To be careful that during the Masah (wiping of the head during Wudhu), the gel / cream must not coat the hair, thus preventing water from reaching it

Men
Males may shave their hair or cut it evenly. That means, "GQ slopes", skip levels are not permissible. The length of the hair should be arranged so that they look smooth, and if there are any changes in length, the transitions must be gradual. Punk-Mohican hairstyles are not permissible. The best hairstyle is the Prophet Muhammad SAW's hairstyle. The hair should be combed back, and the hair is then cut in a straight line from the bottom of the right earlobes to the left earlobes horizontally. It is also sunnah for men to have the hair at equal end-lengths to down to the neck or the shoulders, though this may not be agreeable to employment requirements of today.

Women
It is not permissible for females to cut their hair for the sake of beauty or convenience. For dire health reasons, it is permissible. This ruling is observed even during the Hajj ritual of khuluq. During this Hajj ritual for men, shaving of the head is commended. But for women, only a portion of her hair is removed (approx. one centimetre). Thus it is understood here that a woman's hair should be long and even during the Khuluq ritual in Hajj - this is not sacrificed.

General
It is not permissible to adopt any hair style attributed to Non-Muslims and other religions e.g. monks, priests, punk, jews etc.
