Quick Hadith 108

Hadith 1

Abu Hurairah RA narrates that Rasulullah SAW made du'a:

"O Allah, make the sustenance of the family of Muhammad (SAW) sufficient." (Mishkaat, Mi'raaj)

Hadith 2

Abdullah ibn Umar RA narrates that Rasulullah SAW said:

"That person is indeed successful who brings Islam, he is given sufficient sustenance and Allah grants him content with whatever Allah gives him." (Mishkaat, Mi’raaj)

COMMENTARY

From the first Hadith, we observe the nature and understanding of Rasulullah SAW; and Rasulullah SAW made du'a and requested for only sufficient wealth. Infact, this is the dominant purpose of wealth - that is to gain strength and to be able to worship Allah. In contrast, we see nowadays and even those from the past who are misguided who ask for abundance of wealth - making that the purpose of their lives, whilst being disillusioned by the false hope that wealth will pacify their hearts. A true Muslim, who understands the reality of his/her faith will not be easily distracted; as this distraction occupies and wastes much time, energy and worries.

This point is further explained in the second Hadith, where we are assured that contentment-of the-heart is the aspiration of every human being. Many people search for it by acquiring abundant wealth but in vain, only to acquire more and more. What a person should be like is that - if one has sufficient wealth to be able to sustain himself/herself and his/her dependants, he/she should be content. Allah grants contentment to an individual only if there is sincere to become content. The tongue may lie, but the heart will never lie.
