Working In A Place Partly Selling Haraam Goods

It is permissible work in a store like Tesco, Giant, Carrefour which sells Haraam items e.g. being a cashier in which you will sell the item to the customer. The reason for this is that - since that employee will not be actively involved in selling the Haraam item, he will be excused for collecting monies for Haraam items purchased at the store.

However, it is best to find work in a purer environment for the sake of one's Imaan and spiritual well being and advancement in Deen. He should make effort to find an alternative, while working at his current work place.

Actually this topic is quite vast, and require a lengthy explanation to reach its appropriate depth, width and accuracy.

To start with - this ruling was issued by Muftis of the Darul Iftaa (Fatwa Institution). As we all can see - it contains two discussions:

(1) on what is permissible; and
(2) on what is best.

I have just relayed the words of the Mufti two spread this ruling. Nevertheless, a devout servant of Allah who is concerned about his/her piety will not indulge in such environments.

To further explain, the Mufti(s) have elaborated:

In a normal situation, that is as a Muslim, and being an owner of the store and/or being wealth, it is prohibited to sell lottery, pork and cigarettes. However, if the store belongs to a non-Muslim, and you are poor and needy, you have to support yourself and dependants and there is no source of income besides the store you are working in which Haraam items are also sold, then you will be excused for working there. You should also make Taubah and Istighfar and search for another suitable and Shari’ah compliant source of income.

There is actually more that can be explained. Should I have time I will further elaborate InshaAllah.

I hope this suffices.

Salams.
