It is prohibited to wear pants below the ankle at all times.

Rasulullah SAW said:

Salamu alaikom, I have heard this many times, and i believe the hadith however i think that this may not be applicable to all people. I may be wrong. Could it mean that it is harram if u wear your pants below your ankles OUT OF PRIDE because that was the practice of some proud people in the past and we know that showing off is harram. However if this is not clear we should be careful not to fall into this harram and wear long pants as it will be our lost.

Further explanation as follows:

Rasulullah SAW is reported to have said:

"That person who has an iota of pride will not enter Jannah." (Sahih Muslim)

COMMENTARY

Since this is something to do with a person's intention of the heart, and as such it is hidden from mankind, it is difficult to determine the intention of people. Furthermore, the assumption of wearing the pants below the ankles not remaining a symbol of pride does not affect its Karaahat (abhority) due to the fact that Rasulullah SAW has said:

"Do not lower your garments (over your ankles), for verily, this is because of pride." (Sahih Ibn Hibbaan)

Thus, it is established that this is in itself an act of pride and sin, and it will remain so through out time. In yet another narration, recorded in Sahih Ibn Hibbaan, Rasulullah SAW has informed us:

"Verily Allah does not love those who lower their garments below their ankles."

Hafiz Ibnul Arabi RA further explains on this that it is not permissible for a person to lower his pants over his ankles and claim that he has no pride due to the fact that the prohibition by Rasulullah SAW is general. He also states that such an act (after ignoring such hadith), is in fact, an indication of his pride. Hafiz ibn Hajar RA has also attested to this in his renowned work - Fathul Baari.

May this be beneficial. Salams.
