Prawns & Such

This short message has been written to help us have a better understanding of rulings with regards to the eating of prawns, crabs, squids and other related seafood of the like - so that we are aware and conscious when our Muslim Hanafi brothers/sisters are eating in our company.

According to the three Madhaahib i.e. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali, prawns and other seafood of the like is permissible, irrespective of it being a fish or not.

However, according to the Hanafi Madhab, prawns is not permissible as it is not a fish. This is the general consensus in the Hanafi school.

So for those of us who are adherents of one of the other three schools; when we are preparing dishes / taking our Hanafi Muslims for a meal, let us be aware of this rule, as it is an integral part of their school of jurisprudence.

REMINDER:
All of the four schools of taught of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah are correct. A Muslim must choose one school and adhere to that one to avoid being tempted to use different rulings for different situations inter-madhab to suit one's desires. Also, the mechanism of deriving Islamic Law for the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools are all slightly different. However let us also be aware that 70% of all rulings are the same for these four schools.

Please find below, the explanation from a prominent Hanafi Mufti, Mufti Inrahim Desai DB.

According to the three Madhaahib, viz. Shaaf'ee, Maaliki and Hanbaliy, Crab and prawns are permissible, irrespective of them being fish or not. However, according to the Hanafi Madhab, crab and prawn are not permissible as they are not fish.

(As based on the derivation of rulings for the Hanafi school:)
- from seafood, only fish is made Halaal for us. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Two carions are made Halaal for us; Fish and locust.
' (Mishkaat vol.2 pg.361).

Fish is classified as a Vertebra. Shrimps and lobsters are not vertebras, hence, not permissible.

Some Ulama are of the opinion that shrimps, etc. are fish, therefore,
permissible. Due to the differences of opinion, it is best to adopt Taqwa and abstain from eating shrimps, etc. but they cannot be regarded as swine
meat which is expressly Haraam.

May that clarify.

JazakamullahuKhaira.

Muhtaram Akhee, there is a lot of space lengthwise and vertically also, so my humble advice is, if you want Allah's special mercy, and to be closer to Huzoor sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam during judgement day and wish he would hold your hand and take you into Jannah then write the full form, not SWT and SAWS for Allah and hHis Nabi, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam.
Otherwise your blog is fine.
