If there is anything you want to say or ask, express it here.
Alhamdulillah, this is a good blog.
Check out mine too. (btw. I linked you)
Jazakallah khair brother. Undoubtedly what you're doing is a beautiful act of charity.
Assalamualaikum.
Assalamu Alaikum
I am a Christian revert to Islam for alhamdilullah 8 yrs now. Over these years i have been practicising salat, reading quran and translation - well that's it - i know the basics and what the quran and hadeeth has to say, in general. I understand that i should go the extra mile and try to learn and acquire more knowledge for myself and to pass it on to others (like my christian family members). But now that is a challenging task as they themselves are totally into sufism which i believe does not really stress the necessity of a religion but rather on love, and on one-to-one relationship with God, and whatever enlightenment they receive - without really following certain rules/regulations as in Islam. Also they have a Guru (religious teacher) whom they resort to for any guidance. Please advise as to how i could approach them with the truth considering my limited knowledge - but at the same time knowing that Islam is the only truth - please help me .. as i would really like to do my bit and inshallah succeed, while at the same time strengthening and elevating my iman to a higher level. Please help.
Salams Brother / Sister,
May Allah SWT reward you for reverting into Islam. Such rewards are only known by Allah SWT alone.
Learning Deen, Practicing Deen, Spreading Deen
Alhamdulillah, your practices of Solat, reading from the Qur'an and its translation is good. Reading from Hadith is also good. And we should also make supplication to Allah SWT so that Allah SWT keeps us in such habits. Because, Subhanallah, these habits are only given to the gifted. There are so many Muslims in this world today, most of them coming from Muslim families, but still they themselves (Na'udzubillah) do not perform Solat, neither do they read Qur'an nor the Hadith.
To add onto this, more importantly, we should find and make time to sit with scholars of Islam to understand the application, implication, content and context of the meaning of the Qur'an and Hadith. In analogy, when we are unwell, we may go to the pharmacist and find medicine of the shelf, but for a good insight, we see the doctor, or for deeper insight, we visit the specialist. So similarly also from Hadith of Rasulullah SAW (mafhum) - "the legacy of the Prophet SAW is the Ulama (the scholars of Islam)". Nowadays, we find many people professing to be "scholars". So what we should do is find the pious genuine Ulama, and learn from them. An easy way to identify them is that they will have immense love for Rasulullah SAW, and will be practicing from head to toe, on a daily basis, much of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
With regards to Sufism, let me share with you that Sufism is just a path to achieve righteousness. We do not deny that there are many deviant Sufis out there, but the ultimate goal is very Noble, that is - as you said - all those personal characters which are Noble.
The branch of Tasawwuf (Sufism) is essential in Islam because it teaches us good Akhlaq, Mannerism and to have a pure heart. Nowadays we have Muslims who concentrate on the injunctions in Shari'ah but they cannot develop far because their hearts are filthy. This is the purpose of the Hadith of Rasulullah SAW - (mafhum) - "There is one piece of flesh in the body - of which if it is correct, then the whole body will act correctly. That piece of flesh is - the heart, the heart, the heart."
Evil traits like jealousy, malice, anger, temper - cannot be eliminated just by imposing Shari'ah alone. We will need BOTH. Thus what I suggest is - do not negate their interest in Sufism, but support them and encourage them. On top of that inform on the injunctions that Allah SWT has directed mankind to.
Also - as long your family does not believe that Revelation has come down from Allah - WITH COMMANDMENTS i.e. the Shari'ah, then it will be logically difficult to explain to them. This is why in the Qur'an, the title "O Ye Who BELIEVE" is used to address the Muslims, and not "O Ye Who Want To Understand."
Imaan basically implies to believe in the Unseen. That will only come with Hidayat.
The field you are concerned about is Da'wah and Tabligh. I shall highlight on some points that may be of use InshaAllah:
1. Choice - We must understand that Allah SWT will only give guidance to those whom He wants. There are beloved people whom Rasulullah SAW loved so much, like Abu Talib. Infact Abu Talib was ever protective of his nephew SAW, but still on his death bed, after much encouragement from the Prophet SAW, he still died a disbeliever. So we must understand that the mechanics of guidance i.e. Hidayat is by permission of Allah. Not by our own efforts alone.
2. Physical and Spiritual Effort - We must put in all out effort in Da'wah. This was how the Prophet SAW preached. To the rich, to the poor, to the intelligent, to the dumb, to Arabas, to non-Arabs, to the old, to the young, to the influential, to the ignored etc. The Ulama give this simple sweet advice: "When you give Da'wah - give time, energy and effort as IF you are the who gives Hidayat, but in the middle of the night, stand up in front of Allah, perform Solat, then make Du'a and deny all our efforts, and CRY and BEG Allah - and ask Allah - and withness that ONLY Allah can give our family / friends / mankind Hidayat". Thus, we should do this. This what is lacking in all the preaching of Muslims. We do not develop and maintain our connection with Allah SWT.
3. Ikram & Akhlaq - Amongst the best tools of Da'wah is our character. We should ever be helpful to our family. Give them gifts. Help them in everything they need. Be nice to them. Smile. Give them attention. Sacrifice our time for them. All these excellent traits in Akhlaq soften the hearts of human beings. Much of the eastern archipelago e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia, parts of the Oriental belt embraced Islam because of the good character and soft-heartedness of Yemeni and Gujarati Muslim traders. On the other hand, we should be careful with our speech. We should avoid heated up discussions, debates, and quarrels. We should not be totally reliant on logic when explaining things because we should remember that most human beings are opinionated and have ego in them. To add our comprehension in this, the simple question we should ask ourselves is - although people have common sense, and Islam is all-logical and beautiful, then why is the 6.5 Billion population of people in the whole world still not 100% Muslim? This is because of Hidayat from Allah only. Only Allah can give guidance. Allah has COMMANDED us to perform Da'wah, and Allah SWT has also commanded us to ESTABLISH CONNECTION with Him.
4. Patience and Perseverence - On top of that, we should understand that the Mechanics of Da'wah is not live and direct. Which means - you might be giving Da'wah to your family, but it is one old man in Brazil whom you don't know who embraces Islam by the choice of Allah. Thus, we should always give Da'wah, to anyone and everyone. The Prophet SAW did not emphasise on his family only, but even non-Arabs embraced Islam through his (SAW) Da'wah.
I hope this reply has given you some assistance. May Allah SWT help you and give your family Hidayat. As well asto the whole of mankind. Ameen.
JazakallahuKhaira / JazakillahuKhaira.
